OMG! I took the plunge!

I just ordered myself a Nikon D40 dSLR camera, which I should be getting in the next few days. Woo! What prompted this big purchase? I have a digital prosumer camera right now, an Olympus C8080WZ, which I like quite a bit, but whose autofocus capabilities and glacially slow raw shooting I have become increasingly frustrated with. I wanted something that would give me fine manual focus capability and quick raw shooting, which amounts to getting a dSLR.

Along with the kit lens, I ordered a 50mm prime lens. I didn’t bother spending the extra money on getting an AF-S or AF-I lens (one that has a motor in the lens—because the D40 doesn’t have a focus motor in the body). I figure the extra pain of having to focus manually will be worth the ability to more affordably upgrade to a different camera later. Look out for my first set of D40 pictures soon, along with my latest set of Olympus shots, taken this weekend at Point Reyes.

I got out this weekend and

took a bunch of pictures. Like 50. I think I got a few good shots, so once I edit them (which will take a lot of time that I don’t have at the moment), I’ll post them to Flickr. Be on the look out.

So Matt, Jieun and I

were talking about doing another photo trip this weekend, and one of the suggestions that came up for our location was Santa Cruz. A little while later, Matt sent me an e-mail with a link to this guy’s page of Santa Cruz pictures:

They are, in a word, stunning. Go see for yourself.

This is interesting news

According to this BBC News article, Konica Minolta is getting out of the photography market:

Japanese photographic equipment maker Konica Minolta has announced plans to withdraw from the camera business.

Konica Minolta said the market had become too competitive, and added it would sell its digital camera business to Japanese electronics giant Sony.

[...]

Its decision to ditch the camera business altogether includes the cessation of its colour film and photo paper business, in which it has trailed Eastman Kodak of the US and Japan’s Fuji Photo Film.

Instead, it plans to focus on products such as colour office photocopiers and medical imaging equipment.

This comes shortly after Nikon’s announcement that it is going entirely digital, and eventually ceasing design and manufacture of film cameras. (Via Slashdot)

I jumped on the bandwagon.

So for a while now, my friends have been very active on Flickr. Although I had an account that I’d occasionally post pictures to for the purpose of blogging, I never really did anything with it. Tonight I decided to get my act together; I upgraded to a pro account (the 20 MB upload limit per month for free accounts is a joke) and uploaded a bunch of my favorite photos. Check out my photostream!
